Does anyone know how to ease the pain of plantar fasciitis – or how to prevent the condition?

I also have a tripod gait that causes severe pain to the ball of my foot.

Orthotics or Orthopaedic shoes. You should see a podiatrist to get the correct ones for your feet.

The very best prevention of flare-up is to never go barefoot, do not wear sandals, house slippers or any other kind of shoe that does not have good arch support. Simple stretching should keep the muscle in the arch from become tight or spastic. While standing, you step one foot a bit behind you while gently pressing the heel to the floor. Do this several times a day. Foot massage is also excellent for relieving the discomfort. You need to discuss your gait issues and what is causing that with your orthopedist.

There’s all sorts of information out there about plantar fasciitis…

Your best and most important course of action with any medical problem is to see a doctor, do not rely on the internet.

That being said, as a chronic sufferer of plantar fasciitis, and as somone who’s a regular runner, I’ve found the following solutions…

Get a good pair of sneakers. This doesn’t mean the coolest or most expensive pair of nike sneakers you can find, it means a pair of sneakers that are right for you… New Balance manufactures a variety of sneakers for a variety of foot problems, don’t expect an insant cure, but expect improvement over time. Your best bet is to go to a store which specializes in shoes and sneakers, “The Running Room” is a fantasic store, as the employees are trained to determine your specific needs and reccommend a shoe based on it (Before visiting the running room, I couldn’t run for more then 10 minutes before experiencing severe pain, turns out it was because of bad advice I’d recieved from a sales person in a “mall” athletic store… the running room employees suggested appropriate sneakers, and since then I’ve managed to run a marathon).

Further, get a good pair of arch supports for any footwear other then sneakers, I swear by “Super Feet” in my combat boots and work boots, but they’re geared towards flat footed individuals, here, see a doctor, determine your problems, then look for the solution. “Sorbathane” is another fantastic brand, many people swear by it, but it does me no good at all.

For cures, I’ve found that “cold therapy” works extremely well… get a gel ice pack (Or in a pinch, a bag of frozen peas) and place your foot on it for 30-60 seconds, take your foot off for an equal amount of time, then back on, and then off again, repeat this cycle until the ice pack is no longer cold. This reduces the swelling, which in turn reduces the pain, and reduces the amount of injury you’ll cause by walking on it.

Freeze a small water bottle, and roll the tendon in your foot back and forth over it, this has a similar effect to the ice pack, as well as massaging the tendon…

Again, don’t rely on the internet for this one, if you’ve got serious or chronic problems, seek professional advice (I lived with it for years, and after seeking professional help, I’m substantially better… there’s no such thing as a 100% cure, but there’s all sorts of things to help)
